Suzugami Plate Samidare 13x13cm

Thanks to ancestral know-how, Suzugami was created by the Shimatani Syouryu workshop.

Suzugami or “tin paper” is the name of this unique creation, thin as paper, very resistant and infinitely foldable depending on the desired shape.

Suzugami, these are the enigmatic tin sheets that can be molded as you wish according to your imagination. They can in turn become plates, dishes, cutlery or chopstick rests, displays or storage compartments...

You can fold them, shape them, straighten them, flatten them, the shapes obtained are infinite. It all depends on your imagination!

These hammered tin sheets are available in 2 patterns with poetic names linked to rain, knowing that in Japanese, the lexicon is very vast to describe nature and its variations:

● Samidare : persistent and heavy showers during the June monsoon

● Arare: the evocation of small showers

Remarkable effect of tin:

Tin purifies water and softens acidity.
It is known for its antibacterial effects, resistant to rust and corrosion.
Because of its characteristics, it has been used in making offerings for the gods for a long time in Japan.

These products are not dishwasher safe. Please wash them by hand with a sponge for the delicate surface.

The artisan: Shimatani Syouryu

The Shimatani Syouryu workshop has been based in Takaoka since 1909 in the Toyama region. Since its origin, this workshop has manufactured the famous “orin” bowls used for Buddhist ceremonies, the sound of which accompanies the recitations of sutras in temples. Today, almost 95% of copper, tin and brass crafts come from Takaoka. At the Shimatani Syouryu workshop, three of the last ten artisans present throughout the territory continue to strike the metal of the “orin” bowls to give them a perfectly tuned sound.
